Read and answer the question associated with each scenario.

Scenario 1:

Your PI has just handed you a check for $10,342 from XYZ Company telling you to deposit it into his gift account. Attached to the check is an agreement from XYZ Company that someone at Stanford needs to sign. The agreement includes details on exactly how the money should be spent, a budget, reference to a specific work plan, and a schedule of reports they need on the project, including a final technical report. Looking further into the agreement, you see that there are start and stop dates, and a line item stating that unexpended funds must be returned to the XYZ Company at the end of the project.

Scenario 2:

Your PI has just handed you a check for $10,000 from ABC Foundation telling you to deposit it into his gift account. Attached to the check is a letter from the foundation restricting use of the funds to the study of army ants. He can spend the money any way he wishes. However, any equipment, supplies, travel, scholarships or salaries must be used only for the study of army ants. The letter also states that the company would like to know how the money was used to further the study of army ants, and a request that any articles the PI might write publicly acknowledge their involvement. The company also attached a Form 8283 to be signed by the University for tax purposes.

Scenario 3:

In response to a proposal she submitted, your PI receives a letter from a foundation to support general undergraduate studies program. An annual progress report summarizing past activities is required. The gift or sponsored projects indicators support both gift and sponsored project criteria. How do you classify these?
