Course Syllabus

Welcome to the Humanities Core in Fall 2021! This is the shared Canvas site for the following courses (click the course titles to see the syllabi):

 

 

 

 

HumCore classes meet twice a week. Every Wednesday you will meet in a collaborative conversation with the other students and faculty from all three of the HumCore courses listed above. Every Monday you will focus on a text or object selected by your professor, whose syllabus will lead you through the specific area or question named in your course title (e.g. "Looking for the Way (Dao) in East Asia").  This is the schedule for the Wednesday Collaborative Conversations - which will be in 260-113.

 

Week 1: Origins, History, Tradition: Flood Stories from the Middle East and China

Week 2: Origins, History, Tradition: Herodotus, Sima Qian.

Week 3: Nature, Ecology, Civilization: Laozi, Gilgamesh.

Week 4: Nature, Ecology, Civilization: Thucydides, Mencius

Week 5: Self, Community, Society: Antigone, Job

Week 6: Self, Community, Society:  Compassion in Du Fu, and in The Book of Ruth 

Week 7: Self, Community, Society: Song of Songs, Ovid 

Week 8: Writing, Media, Memory: Written and Oral Torah/ Law, Cicero

Week 9: Writing, Media, Memory:  Chinese calligraphy, Hebrew Sofer Stam, Arabic calligraphy

Week 10: Ideas without borders.
